Role and Responsibilities

The Chief Commercial Officer (Deputy CEO) will be the senior leader responsible for overseeing all PSVTs commercial activities, including creating, implementing, and iterating a commercial strategy that maximises revenue generation from our commercial buildings portfolio and all aspects of our visitor destination offer.

The COO (Deputy CEO) will be to research and develop other revenue generating opportunities, in conjunction with the Executive Team and Stakeholders.

You will drive income generation through PSVT’s commercial property portfolio, the development of visitor products, operational and commercial management of the visitor destination, events, and services, corporate overview PSVT’s fundraising activity, marketing our visitor attractions, public programmes, Port Sunlight itself and communicating effectively with all PSVT stakeholders.

PSVT currently owns 21 grade 2 listed commercial buildings on the village. You will develop and execute a comprehensive business development strategy for the portfolio with the aim of achieving profitability and improving the village offer for both visitors and residents. Estimated capital investment requirements will be in excess of £20m.

You will act as principal advisor to the Board and the Executive Team on all Commercial Development related matters and ensure the achievement of business strategy, utilising resources in an effective and efficient manner.

Working across multiple projects you will be responsible for balancing priorities to ensure Commercial activities are underpinned with well-developed business plans, which are delivered on time, within financial limitations and in line with stakeholder expectations.

The CCO (Deputy CEO) will play a key role in achieving PSVT’s strategic objectives. Working closely with the CEO as part of the Executive Team, you will make a significant contribution to the vision, strategy, and delivery plans for PSVT, ensuring that the organisation’s potential is fully exploited. Working closely with the CEO you will develop a strong understanding of all areas of the business and support the CEO to set, monitor, and evaluate performance across all directorates. Areas of responsibility will be fluid, to ensure full development in all directorates, with increasing autonomy as the wider role progresses.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop and implement an innovative and effective Commercial Income Strategy for PSVT, making best use of the organisation’s assets and resources.
  • Develop robust business models for Board approval of targeted commercial building investment opportunities that support PSVT’s overall vision for the site.
  • Appoint, and act as lead client representative for, contractors to deliver capital building projects ensuring they are effectively planned, monitored, and executed on time and within budget.
  • Responsible for all PSVT’s commercial and community leases to support the site masterplan and PSVT’s business model. Identify appropriate tenants that will add value to the village offer. Take a lead role in connection with rent reviews, letting and lease renew-al programmes etc.
  • Increase visitor income through ticketing and Gift Aid, retail sales, catering and food & beverage concessions, the development of new visitor products and services, and the use of PSVT land for events.
  • Oversee the Visitor Services Team across PSVT’s visitor attractions, ensuring excellent customer care is always delivered in line with PSVT customer service standards.
  • Oversee PSVT’s fundraising strategy, working with other Directors to identify appropriate methods of raising funds to support organisational vision and mission, ensuring its effective implementation and evaluation.
  • Work with the Marketing/Communications Manager to develop and implement a Marketing and Communication Strategy which promotes Port Sunlight as a visitor destination regionally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Set and ensure delivery of ambitious income generation targets for all areas of the Commercial team.
  • Lead PSVT’s Audience Research Strategy, ensuring the workforce always has up-to-date intelligence concerning existing and target audiences.
  • Deputise for and assist the CEO, providing support and direction to the Executive Team.

Executive Team Key Accountabilities

  • Lead, motivate and develop the Commercial Directorate to meet performance objectives that deliver tangible, commercial outcomes through a customer focused approach. Responsible for the recruitment, induction, development, performance management, safety and welfare of staff within the context of PSVT’s values.
  • Develop clear and robust performance management frameworks, culture, and commitment to customer satisfaction. Hold staff, partners, suppliers, and contractors to account, to assist in the delivery of consistent, high quality service standards.
  • Translate strategy into deliverable plans, establishing effective accountability and communication mechanisms that provide staff with clear direction, expectations, and support in the achievement of their responsibilities.
  • In conjunction with the CEO, develop, monitor, and manage budgets and financial plans relevant to all areas of expenditure falling within the remit of the Commercial Directorate.
  • Work within established reporting and risk management systems, ensuring compliance with regulatory, control mechanisms and statutory requirements.
  • Prepare and present regular Board reports, keeping the Board appraised of directorate performance, procedures, new legislation, and policy reviews.
  • Attend Board meetings and relevant committee meetings as required.
  • Undertake any further duties determined as reasonable and necessary in the fulfilment of the role which include providing out of hours, on call support and guidance to PSVT’s nominated out of hours call centre service.

Person Specification

  • Experience of representing the commercial function at executive/senior level, as well as being an active contributor to the wider organisational strategy.
  • Experience of leading complex multifaceted capital building projects.
  • Driving commercial performance in a visitor attraction or similar organisation.
  • Proven track record of increasing profitability of commercial operations and driving sus-tained growth in a similar environment.
  • Successful track record in significant fundraising.
  • Extensive experience of leading high performing teams to deliver excellent customer ser-vice and improve quality across all areas.
  • Management experience, in Marketing, Visitor Attraction, Events Management.
  • Adept at strategic and operational planning and policy implementation.
  • Operation of an effective performance management framework, including service plan-ning, target setting, performance appraisal and management of performance.
  • Evidence of robust financial management with a track record of achieving excellent ser-vice outcomes.
  • Adept at stakeholder management and building meaningful partnerships.
  • Working knowledge of health and safety, ensuring statutory regulations are always ap-plied to events and all aspects of visitor and staff activities.
  • Ability to remain flexible, collegiate and adaptive in a dynamic work environment,
  • Hold an appropriate professional qualification commensurate with role or a degree level education in relevant discipline.
  • Ability to cover or to develop to cover for the Chief Executive.
  • Providing effective budgetary control to ensure that income and expenditure targets are met, and profit is maximised.
  • Ability to operate in both a hands-on and strategic capacity.
  • Ability to balance and understand the commercial nature of the business with the it’s char-itable and conservation objectives.
